HOLLAND COUNCIL ON AGING
Minutes of meeting held on December 2, 2009

Meeting opened at 10:20 a.m. by Chairman Bruce Plumley.

PRESENT: COA members: Tom Baltazar, Lowell Nixon, Olive Nixon, Brad Noble, Bruce Plumley, Jack Reed and Susan Sanders.  Others: Senior Center Director: Margaret Crock, Manager: Don Sanders, and Activities Coordinator Linda Artruc.

ABSENT:  Earl Johnson, and Outreach Worker Deb Tierney.
MINUTES:  Motion by Brad to accept meeting minutes of November 4, 2009, was seconded and approved.  

REPORTS:  Debbie Tierney, Outreach Worker – Deb was not present at the meeting and her report was not available for presentation.

SENIOR CENTER DIRECTOR: Margaret Crock.
In September 920 contacts were made and 133 seniors were served.  303 attended the Senior Center, 127 attended congregate meals.  The balance includes: Cards & games (54), exercise (35), senior tax work off program (50), intergenerational activities (153), phone calls (90), COA meeting (7), stained glass classes (10), blood pressure clinic and core training (15), garden club and clean up day (11), computers (10), speakers (38), Sen. Kerry’s rep (5), Veteran’s service director (5), crafts (7).  Donations include vegetables etc. from the Nixons and Alan Nason, and DVDs etc from Doreen Doyle.  We are working with Wales Senior Center to supply new gift for Christmas for the homeless in Springfield.  Honor Sullivan is liaison.  

SENIOR TAX ABATEMENT PROGRAM: Margaret Crock
As of November 30, 2009, the Senior Center has used the program in the amount of $1,912.00 ($248. for the month), the Town Clerk $230.00 ($146. for the month), Assessors officer ($64.), Tax office ($262.), and Holland Elementary School ($756.) Total YTD is $3,254.00.  Mike Linkhart has joined this Program and is helping Don.

PROGRAM COMMITTEE:  Regular programs:  Lunch is served every Monday as well as on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month – reservations, please.  Monday Mah Jong at 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., Veterans Services Agent each Monday at noon – reservations needed; 2nd Monday Garden Club at 10:30 a.m.; Tuesday Stained glass classes at 10:30 a.m. and craft class at 1:00 p.m.; Wednesday 10:00 a.m. exercise class, and COA meeting on the 1st Wednesday; Thursday 12:30-3:00 p.m. cribbage, and crafts from 1:00-3:00 p.m. with Linda Artruc.  Card games, scrabble and puzzles available daily. BINGO will begin in January – please sign up.  December events:  December 3rd trip to Overlook 10:15 to 3:00; December 9th birthday lunch at noon; December 7th 1:00 p.m. 2nd grade visits us and will receive hats and mittens made by Seniors; December 16th Christmas celebration from 12:00 to 3:00 with gift swap of $5-10 optional.  January 8, 2010 – blood drive.  Various intergenerational activities including parties, showers and family reunions are scheduled.  We are looking for people to join us for the stained glass class and the garden club.  Jean Lynch and Jane Benedetto have offered to help Eleanor with BINGO.  Reminder: BINGO is NOT for money!  





FINANCIAL:  Brad Noble, Treasurer  
September report includes:  Receipts: GSSSI $583.33, Formula Grant $3,500. and gifts totaling $550.00.  Expenditures: Allied Waste $34.22, telephone $3.64, lawn care $42.00, National Grid $90.68, postmaster $53.04, supplies $412.40, Osterman Gas $347.78, newsletter printing $41.08, and salaries $1,852.65.   

MANAGER: Don Sanders – Problem with one door which may or may not cost us for repair is pending.  He suggests an increase in the suggested donation to $150.00 from the current amount of $125.00 beginning in 2010.  Motion made by Brad to increase the suggested donation to $150.00 was seconded and unanimously carried.  Currently two events are scheduled for 2010, on 2/7 and 6/26.

Motion to accept all of the above verbal and printed reports was made by Brad and approved by the Council on Aging.

OLD BUSINESS:  More Council members have completed the Ethics Commission training.  Help is available at the Senior Center for those who do not have computers at home.  Tom asked where questions about ethics violations could be addressed.  The Town Clerk is the person to contact.

NEW BUSINESS:   None.

The meeting was adjourned at 11:05 a.m.
